Is Belize safe? It’s one of the first questions schools and groups ask when they start planning a trip. Here is what we tell them
To find out how Somos runs safety on every trip, see our Safety page.

Is Belize Safe?
Belize is rated Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution,” by the U.S. State Department, with crime as the main concern. The latest update issued in March 2026 left that level unchanged. The advisory notes that the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.
Outside Belize City, most of the places travelers visit have low crime and a well-established tourism industry.
Is Belize City Safe?
Belize City is the country’s largest city and the most common point of entry. Parts of it are rough, and travelers should be cautious, especially at night.
Fort George and Buttonwood Bay are safer neighborhoods with colonial architecture and easy access to the waterfront. The Tourism Village near the cruise terminal is also considered secure. Avoid the south side and use trusted transportation. Most of our groups pass through on the way somewhere else.
Is San Ignacio Safe?
San Ignacio, in the Cayo District, is one of Belize’s safest towns. It’s the base for Xunantunich, Caracol and the ATM Cave.
The town has a small-town feel and a mature tourism industry. Crime is low, and visitors walk the streets, cafes and markets with ease. It’s a secure base for waterfalls, caves and archaeological sites.
Is Ambergris Caye Safe?
Ambergris Caye and its main town, San Pedro, sit close to the Belize Barrier Reef, and the island is one of the country’s top destinations for snorkeling and diving.
It is widely considered safe, with a strong police presence and a community that protects its tourism economy. Most crime is petty and avoidable: don’t leave valuables unattended, and stay out of unfamiliar areas late at night. Visitors consistently describe San Pedro as walkable and friendly.
Other Places in Belize
Caye Caulker: Smaller and quieter than Ambergris Caye, with a tight-knit community. Considered very safe.
Placencia: A calm beach village in southern Belize, well suited to families.
Hopkins: A Garifuna village on the coast, known for its music, food and culture. One of the safest places in Belize to experience local life.
Punta Gorda: Remote and less visited, but generally safe. Plan ahead and use reliable guides and transport.
Belmopan: The capital is quiet and clean and sees few tourists.
Why Groups Keep Choosing Belize
Belize is the only Central American country where English is the official language, which makes logistics simple for North American groups. It packs reef, rainforest, caves and Maya sites into a country you can cross in a few hours. Private shuttles, water taxis and domestic flights make it easy to move between them securely.
